Who here doesn't have a love-hate relationship with facebook?
Or what ís really yóúr association with this platform?
I had a conversation with two friends the other day, more about the down-sides of facebook, that made me aware how much my own perspective has shifted over time.
At first I used FB only practically:
To learn about events, to spread my own, etc.
It works especially well when people I connect to 'in the real world' also use it.
Besides that it was glimpse into other peoples activities and life. It will never be more than a glimpse. I will not confuse it with the 'real life' out there.
But there is something more to it... That's what this post is about.
My friends were mainly concerned with the issue of privacy, addictive side effects, etc.
One of them, being marketing expert, said:
"So many people live just 'inside' facebook. They believe it is all there is... especially youngsters.
But with my background, I see all the tricks that facebook uses to keep peoples attention fixed, through. The hypocrisy of this medium, pretending to be some kind of innocent gadget, but in truth being a manipulative monster."
I totally understand what he means about people with their heads burried like ostriches in the facebook quicksand.
"Facebook might indeed be a breeding ground for lazy consumerism. People are in a sense 'being created'. It is a low-vibration tool. But perhaps it will generate enough contrasting experience in peoples lives, that eventually will make them choose for whatever they do really want.
It might wake something up in them in the end?
Only people that are sensitive to be manipulated, will be. Just like everywhere else in the world, regardless whether it is happening in a village, in the church, on the streets, in a company, or on facebook. But I am not worried about those people. What are you worried about, really?"
My friend, with agony in his face:
"Because they just throw away their lives and their amazing qualities!!!"
Somewhat daring, I pointed out:
"Well, that is then your problem, not theirs. The fact that you feel bad about that, is a reflection upon yourself - not upon them..."
I saw that he struggled to understand this extreme sounding viewpoint, that may have appeared off-topic.
"If you feel bad about it," I clarified, " the problem is never them, it is you - not trusting them: their path, their connection to themselves, to life itself!
When you don't feel good about observing them, it might take you also out of your own connection to life!"
This topic of 'being created/manipulated, versus creating' is an interesting one.
It led me to this thought:
Discern: what ís it exactly, that makes people, young ánd old, hang out on the internet, with gaming, or endless social media scrolling?
There might be a striking parallel between one of the laws of the universe and one element that is replicated in the facebook setup.
I personally think it is this: the aspect of energy flowing. It gives stimulation. Though perhaps often shallow, fake or unreliable.
There comes no end to the news-'feed'. A newspaper has a last page. Facebook doesn't. This 'lane' of scrolling down, plus the possibility to just keep clicking on topics of your interest has an endlessness and ease that keeps people captivated.
>What facebook wants, is to keep you there, to replace all other internet facilities!<
Another important element here is: (quasi) making your own choice, and maybe the most important: the appearance of moving WITHOUT EFFORT!!!! This lats one is a big deal!
It is a some virtual version of energy in motion that can also be experienced externally, like being on a ferry between two shores, or a road trip to every next horizon. These scenario's represent a 'time outside of the time' or a sense of freedom, just like facebook.
(To me the social media obsession also seems a counter reaction to the extreme pressure that is exercised in our world, especially over young people. We are asked to adapt to ways that are denying inner guidance and listening to one's own needs.
Figure: who learns at a young age how to tap in to real, sustainable physical /emotional/ energetic nourishment?! Almost nobody.
The internet gives an pseudo-impression of freedom, especially to the things that are taboo and forbidden. Out of a lack of genuine communication in our society, grow many misperceptions, that result in certain shadow sides of life. With all its consequences. Going out of balance, but eventually coming back into balance - usually after the the total breakdown.)
Although it is the question, whether your free will is being deliberately supported on facebook (ha ha), it might not be too far away from what the universe mirrors anyway: your own choice, freedom.
Whatever your own choice will be, here on facebook, on the internet, or anywhere in the 'real world' - what you make it to be! - will determine what your experience is gonna be like.
I also used to be very suspicious of facebook, just like my friends.
I had a strong prejudice against everything having to do with virtual.
I also used to believe in the 'real world' only. In nature, mainly! Still do...
At first I was extremely uncomfortable with the idea that any of my activity or posts were gonna be seen by so many different people in my network, from different area's in my life.
I 'scanned' where it was gonna arrive...Family, friends, people from the school I used to work at, other types of work, people who understand my background, people who know / don't know the way I perceive life, people that are 'spiritual', people that aren't at all... Dutch people, american people, now greek people. everything mixed up together! What a jumble! What a puzzling audience!
Responses out of my sight, and I could not even begin to reflect on what the ripple effect will be of it.
I understand my discomfort now as an indication of my own censorship, and at that time - perhaps - inauthenticity.
Over time, having seen others find their way with sharing themselves from a genuine place, inspired me, and enhanced my understanding about a platform such as this, where one click can reach so far so rapidly. It is just a temporary tool. Maybe not the best one...but nevertheless.
Sharing my own life content became more a game with myself. The way I take life anyway, whether it is on facebook or somewhere else.
In the end this is not far off the ripple effect that any expression or action will cause, seen or unseen.
The state of resonance that you are in, will be what you get back.
Whether it is standing on a stage in a crowd, on a party with friends, even sitting all by yourself with your thoughts, or on facebook.
Ultimately it is all energy & consciousness.
When I am focussed and grounded, roaming around on facebook doesn't per se have to be shallow and sheep-lish!
I believe that messages transmit any way through intention and vibration, and that the words and the facebook-'container' are just a carrier.
Social media can also be (re)created, rather than it creating me.
Just like anything in this reality, that can be shape shifted to my liking within my own perception.
It is but one reflection, one, space, one dimension of a collective.
A collective that I feel very much part of.
...Even through facebook!
